Eulogy on Shiv

I sing praise of Shankara, Who is the abode of mercy, Who is the abode of Shiva (Parvati), Who is known as Kalabhairav, Who is bliss, Who is adored by Death, Who is the abode of auspiciousness, Who relieves from the clutches of tough luck, Who meditates on Adishakti (Kali), and Who lured Shiva and Sati with His charms.||1||

I sing praise of Shankara, Who is the abode of mercy, Who is the abode of Shiva, Who is decorated by headless body and skull (as Gana), Who slays the pride of Manoj (Kamadev), Who possesses ashes, ghosts, king of snakes and a lion's skin, Who forgives the fault of devotees, and Who always absolves the devotees from the mundane existence.||2||

I sing praise of Shankara, Who is the abode of mercy, Who is the abode of Shiva, Who beholds the pure flow from Ganga in tresses, Who is Digambara, Who has the king of night (moon) adorned in the middle of His head, Who is the great Lord, and Who is the leader of monodent, Danda, skulls, skin, bull and Ganesh.||3||

I sing praise of Shankara, Who is the abode of mercy, Who is the abode of Shiva, Who has earring and garland of snakes, Who is the Lord of Shiva, Who has a snake as Upavita (sacred thread), Who is the Lord of demi-gods, Who destroyed the poison named Kalakuta¹, and Who protects the whole world.||4||

I sing praise of Shankara, Who is the abode of mercy, Who is the abode of Shiva, Who bestows all the wishes of ours, Who is the king of the arrows of Kama (essentially beyond them), Who is resplendent like millions of sun, Who harasses the grief of the three-worlds, Who is beautiful, Who is known as Hara, and Who provides the power of chanting and tantra.||5||

I sing praise of Shankara, Who is the abode of mercy, Who is the abode of Shiva, Who is a ruler revered by everyone, Who has the knowledge of past, present and future, Who destroyed the sacrifice of Daksha, Who absolves using the chant of Mukunda (in Kashi)², Who destroys evils and worries, and Who has blooming lotus-like eyes.||6||

I sing praise of Shankara, Who is the abode of mercy, Who is the abode of Shiva, Who is Bhutanath, Who pleases the ghosts, Who is served with Bhanga and ashes, Who adorns the home of snow (Kailasa), Who is powerful, Who has blood-red lips, and Who has snake-ornaments in ears.||7||

I sing praise of Shankara, Who is the abode of mercy, Who is the abode of Shiva, Who destroys the world (dooms day), Who is adored by the three-worlds, Who was not won by Daksha, Kamadev (Manmath) or Andhaka, Who is the support of mercy and art, Who has moon at crest, Who ends the world, and Who is beyond mercy and compassion.||8||

O Yaksha, Who is the consort of slayer of Shumbha (Parvati), Who has lotus-eyes, Who has a snake garland, Who protects bliss and righteousness, Who nurtures the world, Who destroys pain and grief of poor, Who is immortal and never ages, Who swallows grief, Who is deft in giving, Who is beyond the earth! Protect me.||9||

Notes:

¹ The poison that emerged out of ocean-churning, during the incarnation of Tortoise, is known as Kalakuta.

² Shiv whispers a Rama-Mantra in the ears of person dying in Kashi to absolve them. Death in Kashi is supposed to absolve the ocean of mundane existence
