Mauni Amavasya
Mauni Amavasya is the new moon day in the Hindu Magh month (January – February) and is an important bathing date at the Magh Mela. In 2008, Mauni Amavasya is on February 7. (In some calendars Amavasi is also marked on February 6). The word ‘mauna’ or ‘mauni’ means silence and several Hindu devotees keep complete silence on the day. The day is also of great significance during the Kumbh Mela.‘Mauna’ or silence is an essential part of spiritual discipline. It gives us an opportunity to introspect and initiate a dialogue within oneself. In silence, you can carefully observe how your mind works. Keeping the mouth shut and letting the mind wander aimlessly is more dangerous than blabbering. The best method to keep the mind quiet is by investigating what triggers a thought.
On Mauni Amavasya day, large number of Hindu devotees join kalpavasis at Sangam (Allahabad) and meditate the whole day. Mauni Amavasya is an important bathing date during the annual Magh Mela and during the famous Kumbh Mela.
